Peru State Softball Defeats Graceland 12-9 in an Offensive Shootout

On Wednesday, April 6, the Peru State softball team defeated Graceland 12-9. The second game was postponed due to cold temperatures with Peru State leading 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth. The game will be resumed when the Yellowjackets visit Peru on Tuesday, April 26.

The Bobcats are 9-16 overall and 4-10 in Heart conference play. The Yellow Jackets are now 8-16 overall and 4-7 in conference play.

Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury), Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) and Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) led off the first inning with three singles to load the bases for the Bobcats. Then a sac-fly to left from Carli Kohout (Cortland) brought in the first run of the game.

Jerica German (Cortland) drew a walk to reload the bases for the 'Cats. Then Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) hit a single as Beckmann came into score as Peru State now led 2-0.

Later in the inning Jessye Rowland (Pearcy, Ark.) was hit by a pitch to bring in Wilke as the 'Cats led 3-0. Peru State scored three runs on four hits and left three on.

In the bottom of the first with one out the Yellowjackets reached based on an error. Then a single and an advance would have Graceland threatening with runners in scoring position. Then another error would have a Yellowjacket reach base but the runner on third got caught in a run down for a 2-5 putout.

 A walk would score the first run of the game for the Yellowjackets. Graceland scored one run on one hit and left two on in the first.

Ohlde started the top of the second with a single but was then bounced at second from a fielder's choice. Then Wilke hit a two-run shot over center field as the 'Cats extended their lead 5-1.

Later in the inning with two down German hit the Bobcats' second home run in the game again over the center field fence. Peru State scored three runs on three hits and left no one on

The Yellowjackets hit a one out single, but then was caught stealing. Graceland got one more base runner on from a hit by pitch but no damage was done. The Yellowjackets had no runs on no hits and left one on.

The Bobcats went three up three down in the top of the third inning. Graceland started the home half of the third with a single. Then a walk had the 'Jackets with runners on first and second.

A single would bring in another run for Graceland. Then a productive ground out moved the runners into scoring position. Graceland, then scored two runs from a single as they cut the lead down to two. The Yellowjackets scored three runs on three hits and left two on.

In the top of the fourth Ohlde blasted a double to leadoff. Then with one out Wilke blasted a double bringing Ohlde around to the plate. Peru State scored one run on two hits and left one on.

The Yellowjackets in the bottom of the fourth inning loaded the bases from a walk a single and an error. The Bobcats got an out at home as a fielder's choice kept the bases loaded but the 'Cats prevented the run from scoring.

A strikeout and a pop out would end the 'Jacket threat. Graceland had no runs on one hit an error and left three on.

Three errors in the top of the fifth had Rothschild, Mya Mathes (Ankeny, Iowa) and Rowland all reach base. Rothschild would score on the third error of the inning

Ohlde singled to reload the bases for Peru State. Then a Beckmann single brought Mathes into score. Wilke then singled to bring Rowland home. The hits kept coming as Kohout hit a single to bring in Ohlde. Beckmann would come into score from an error by the center fielder. Peru State scored five runs on four hits four errors and left two on leading 12-4 heading into the fifth.

Three singles with one out in the bottom of the fifth kept the game alive as a Yellowjacket came into score as Graceland now trailed 12-5. The 'Jackets scored one run on three hits and left two on.

The 'Cats went 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth inning. Graceland led off the sixth with a walk. The base runner was later out on a fielder's choice. Then a single had runners on first and second. A pop up to short, ended Graceland's threat. The 'Jackets had no runs on one hit and left two on.

Ohlde started the seventh with a leadoff single for her fifth hit of the day she batted 1.000 going 5-for-5. Then three quick outs ended the inning for the 'Cats. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.

Graceland did not go down without a fight as they started the home half of the seventh with two singles as they threatened with runners on first and second. Then a double scored one run as they trailed 12-6.

A productive ground out would make the score 12-7 with two down in the seventh. Then a single made the score 12-8 as the Yellow Jackets were mounting a comeback. Then a double scored another Graceland runner as the Bobcat lead had been trimmed to three.

A ground out would end the game as the 'Cats defeated the 'Jackets 12-9.

Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched a complete game striking out six batters giving up nine runs on 15 hits, eight runs were earned. Krieser took the win.

Ohlde led the way in hits as she had five on the day. Wilke was in a close second with four hits, but she led the way in RBIs as she brought in four.

Peru State is at home Saturday, April 9, against MidAmerica Nazarene first pitch is at noon. Sunday, April 10, they will face Park first pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
