Peru State Softball Swept at Benedictine

On Saturday, April 16, the Peru State softball team was swept by Benedictine. The Bobcats are now 11-24 overall and 6-18 in Heart conference play while the Ravens are 22-16 overall and 13-12 in conference play.

Below is a breakdown of how each game went

Game 1

Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) drew a leadoff walk for Peru State and with one down Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a single as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. Unfortunately, a double play ended the 'Cats threat as they had no runs on one hit and left one on.

Benedictine led off the bottom of the first with a single and then the runner advanced to second on a passed ball. A single then scored the first run of the game for the Ravens. The runner later stole second to get into scoring position.

A second single scored the second run of the game as the Ravens now led 2-0. Three more singles in the inning scored two more runs as Benedictine was now up 4-0. The Ravens scored four runs on six hits and left two on in the first.

Peru State went three up three down in the second inning. The bats stayed hot for the Ravens as the leadoff batter hit a double. Then the Ravens were threatening with runners on first and second after the runner reached on a fielder's choice.

A double play then had the Ravens to their last out, but they kept the inning going with a double as they extended their lead to five. A walk and a single then loaded the bases for Benedictine. The Ravens drew another walk as a sixth run came into score. Benedictine scored two runs on three hits and left three on base.

Ohlde managed a two out single in the top of the third but the 'Cats were unable to bring her around to score. Benedictine drew a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the third. Then the baserunner stole second to get into scoring position. A single had runners on the corners for the Ravens.

Benedictine loaded the bases from a two out walk but were unable to score as the Ravens had no runs on one hit and left three on base.

Peru State and Benedictine went three up three down in  the fourth inning. Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) hit a leadoff single in the top of the fifth inning, but three quick outs ended any threat for the 'Cats.

The Ravens got a runner on in the bottom of the fifth from a hit by pitch, then the baserunner stole second to get into scoring position. Benedictine then drew a walk as they threatened with runners on first and second. A triple scored two more runs as the Ravens ended the game winning 8-0 in five innings.

Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched 1.2 innings striking out one batter giving up six runs on nine hits-all six were earned. Krieser took the loss. Layla Worthington (Holladay, Utah) pitched 2.1 innings striking out three batters giving up no runs on one hit. Bailey Bitz (Ravenna) rounded out the pitching for the 'Cats giving up two runs on two hits-the two were earned.

Ohlde, Wessel and Wilke tied for hits with one each in game one.

Game 2

Peru State went down in order to start game two. The Ravens singled with one out in the bottom of the first and then the baserunner stole second to get into scoring position. A single with two down scored the first run of the game for the Ravens. Benedictine scored one run on two hits and left one on.

The Bobcats went three up three down in the top of the second. Benedictine after one out loaded the bases from reaching on an error and two singles. Then a double scored three runs as the Ravens were now up 4-0. Then a stolen third base and an error scored the fifth run for the Ravens.

After a single, the Ravens hit a homerun as they had blown the game wide open now leading 7-0. A walk put another Raven runner on base, then the runner stole second to get in scoring position. A double then put Benedictine up 8-0. The Ravens scored seven runs on six hits two errors and left one on.

Caryle Rothschild (Eros, La.) hit a leadoff single in the top of the third, but she would later be bounced in a double play as the 'Cats rough day at the plate continued as they had no runs on one hit and left no one on.

The Ravens went three up three down in the bottom of the third. Wilke walked with two down in the fourth, then Carli Kohout (Cortland) singled to keep the two out rally alive. A line out ended the inning as Peru State had no runs on one hit and left two on.

Benedictine hit a single to leadoff the home half of the fourth. The baserunner later stole second. Benedictine left the runner stranded as they had no runs on one hit.

Rothschild hit a one out single in the top of the fifth, but the Bobcats were unable to bring the runner home to keep the game alive as the Bobcats lost to the Ravens 8-0 in five innings.

Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched 1.2 innings striking out one batter giving up eight runs on eight hits-only three were earned. Leach took the loss. Worthington pitched 2.1 innings striking out one batter and only giving up one hit.

Rothschild led the way in hits with two.

Peru State is back on the road at Grand View Wednesday, April 20, for 2.5 games as they need to finish the postponed game with the Vikings leading 3-0 in the first. The regularly scheduled double header will start at 2:00 p.m.
