Peru State Softball Splits at Baker

On Friday, April 15, the Peru State softball team split at Baker as they won game one 6-3 and lost game two 6-2. The Bobcats are now 11-22 overall and 6-16 in Heart conference play while the Wildcats are 18-15 overall and 9-11 in conference play.

Below is a breakdown of how each game went…

Game 1

In the first inning with one down Payton Beckmann (Syracuse) hit a double as the Bobcats were threatening to score early. Then Morgan Wilke (Bakersfield, Calif.) singled as Peru State now had runners on the corners A strike out and a ground out ended a promising first inning as the Bobcats had no runs on two hits and left two on.

Baker led off the bottom of the first with a double. Then a single for the Wildcats brought in the first run of the game. A walk had Baker with runners on first and second, then they tried to execute a double steal but would be thrown out at third for the first out of the inning.

A ground out and a strike out ended the inning for the Wildcats. Baker scored one run on two hits and left one on.

Hailey Wessel (Malcolm) hit a leadoff single to start the second inning. The Bobcats loaded the bases from a couple of walks by Carlye Rothschild (Eros, La.) and Mya Mathes (Ankeny, Iowa). Then a productive ground out from Alaina Lacy (Lincoln) tied the game at one.

Ellie Ohlde (Fairbury) reloaded the bases from a walk. Unfortunately, the Bobcats could not get anything more in the second inning. Peru State scored one run on one hit and left three on base.

The Wildcats tried to start a two out rally with back-to-back singles as they threatened with runners on the corners. A flyout ended the second inning threat. Baker had no runs on two hits and left two on.

Carli Kohout (Cortland) led the top of the third with a walk. Wessel with one down then singled as the Bobcats had runners on first and second. Mathes hit a two out double as Kohout would come home to take the 2-1 lead for the Bobcats.

Lacy on the next at-bat hit a single as Peru State took a 3-1 lead. The Bobcats scored two runs on three hits and left two on in the third. Baker went three up three down in the third inning.

Wilke singled in the fourth inning, but the Bobcats were unable to get anything going in the fourth inning offensively. Peru State had no runs on one hit and left one on.

Baker was only able to get a one out walk in the home half of the fourth. The Bobcats were clinging to a 3-1 lead.

The Bobcats went down in order in the top of the fifth inning. The Wildcats started the bottom of the fifth with a single then a sac bunt advanced the runner into scoring position.

A two out single had the Wildcats threatening with runners on the corners. A ground out ended the inning as Baker had no runs on two hits and left two on.

Lacy led off the top half of the sixth with a single. Cassie Pearson (Aurora, Colo.) came into pinch run. Ohlde then doubled as the Bobcats had two runners in scoring position. Beckmann reached on a fielder's choice as Peru State had the bases loaded.

Wilke singled as the Bobcats added a fourth run leading 4-1. Then  Kohout singled to make the score 5-1. Jerica German (Cortland) on the next at-bat hit a sac fly as Beckmann into score with the Bobcats now leading by five. Peru State scored three runs on four hits and left two on base.

Baker led off the home half of the sixth with a single. A two out walk had runners on first and second for the Wildcats. Then a single an error scored the second run of the game for Baker. The Wildcats scored one run on two hits an error and left two on.

Mathes hit a leadoff single in the seventh, but she would be bounced in a double play. The Bobcats had no runs on one hit and no one left on.

Baker led the home half of the seven with a drawn walk then the base runner stole second to get in scoring position. Then another walk had runners on first and second. A one out single then loaded the bases for the Wildcats.

A second single of the inning cut the lead in half as they trailed 6-3. A fielder's choice at the plate and a strike out ended the game. Baker had one run on two hits and left the bases loaded in the final inning.

Alana Krieser (Lincoln) pitched a complete game striking out four batters giving up three runs on ten hits-the three runs were earned. Krieser earned the win.

Wilke led the way in hits in game one as she had three. Lacy led the way in RBIs with two in game one.

 

Game 2

The top of the first inning the Bobcats went three up three down. Baker drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first. Then a sac bunt advanced the runner into scoring position. The runner would be 60-feet away from the plate after a wild pitch.

Then a productive ground out scored the first run of the game for Baker. The Wildcats scored one run on no hits one error and left one on in the first.

In the second inning, with one out, two singles from German and Wessel had the Bobcats with runners on first and second. A third straight single from Rothschild scored the tying run for Peru State. The Bobcats scored one run on three hits and left two on.

Baker threatened after a one out single and a stolen base, but they were unable to bring the runner home. The Wildcats had no runs on one hit and left one on.

Peru State went down in order in the third. Baker in the bottom of the third inning had runners on first and second. A double play and a fly out ended the Wildcat threat as they had no runs on no hits and no errors and left one on.

The Bobcats went 1-2-3 in the fourth. Baker started the bottom of the fourth inning with a double. Then a sac bunt advanced the runner all the way to third. A single would break the 1-1 tie as the Wildcats took the lead. Baker scored one run on two hits and left one on.

Rothschild drew a walk but would be bounced after Mathes hit a single. Ohlde then doubled as the Bobcats threatened with runners in scoring position. A groundout ended the inning. The Bobcats scored no runs on two hits and left two on.

Baker drew a two out walk in the fifth but that was it for offense. Wilke led the sixth with a single then with one out a German single had Peru State with runners on first and second. Wessel then singled as the Bobcats tied the game at two. Peru State scored one run on three hits and left two on.

Baker led the home half of the sixth with a single. Then the Wildcats started a two out rally with a double as the Wildcats took a 3-2 lead. Then a walk had base runners on first and second. A three-run blast had the Wildcats blow open the game as they now led 6-2. The Wildcats scored four runs on three hits and left no one on.

Peru State went three up three down as they lost the second game 6-2.

Cheyenne Leach (Wymore) pitched six innings striking out three batters giving up six runs on six hits-all six were earned. Leach took the loss.

German and Wessel tied for hits in game two with two each. Rothschild and Wessel each had an RBI in game two.

Peru State heads to Atchison, Kansas for a doubleheader at Benedictine on Saturday, April 16. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
