On August 24, the Peru State volleyball team was swept by Southwestern College. The Bobcats fall to 0-3 on the season while the Moundbuilders improve to 1-0 on the year.
Below is a breakdown of how each set went in the match:
In the beginning of the first set, it was a back-and-forth affair as both teams traded points. Then the Moundbuilders started to pull away in the first as they went on a 5-0 run to make the score 12-7. The set was within five points for a little while longer until Southwestern, started to pull away with another 5-0 run as they were now leading 19-9.
Allie Schneider (Humphrey) stopped the bleeding for the 'Cats as she would get a kill to make the score 19-10. Sidney Peck (Manitoba, Canada) would have an ace as the Bobcats now were down 19-11. Unfortunately, Peru State would only score one more point in the set as Southwestern went onto win the set 25-12.
The Bobcats started out hot in the second set with kills by Michelle Beer (Salem), Kennedy Miller (Plattsmouth) and Schneider to make the score 3-1. The 'Cats and the Moundbuilders then traded points for a while in set number two. Southwestern would go on a bit of a run to separate their lead out to four 15-11.
Peru State then came back with a quick 3-1 run of their own with kills by Schneider, Miller and Beer to get within two down 16-14. A little later in the set the Moundbuilders extended their lead back out to four 20-16.
The Bobcats made one final push as they went on a 6-2 run to take the lead late 23-22, from a kill by Schneider. The Moundbuilders punched the final blow as they scored the last three points in the set winning 25-23.
In the third set the Moundbuilders raced out to an 8-3 lead, then the Bobcats came to life later in the set as they would go on a 6-0 run to take a 13-12 lead off a kill from Schneider. Then in the middle of the set the Bobcats and Moundbuilders were going back and forth.
Peru State tried to pull away a few times, but they could not get a hold on the lead. Late in the third set Katie Mendick (Bellevue) had a kill to make the score 18-16 'Cats. Peru State would lead by three late in third off a attack error from Southwestern leading 22-19. Southwestern went on one final 6-1 run to win the match 25-23 sweeping the Bobcats.
Leading the way in kills was Schneider with nine, Beer and Mendick finished behind her with eight and seven respectively. Schneider had two aces while Peck and Olivia Gordon (Oskaloosa, Iowa) had one each. Ofaloto Moungaafi (West Valley City, Utah), Miller and Mendick each had a block. Schneider led the way in assists with 17, Gordon had seven and Alyssa Bock (Plattsmouth) had three. Leading the way in digs was Mattie Nichols (Auburn) with 13, Bock and Peck had seven each.
The road does not get any easier for the Bobcats as they host No. 21 Grand View University on Tuesday, August 30, with a 7:00 p.m. start time.
