CSM Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Season

College of Saint Mary suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday.

The Flames lost a nonconference contest 63-56 to Peru State College. CSM is now 2-1 on the season, while the Bobcats are also 2-1.

Peru State was solid from the free-throw line with 23 shots made out of 34 for 68 percent. CSM was 8 of 18 from the charity stripe for 44 percent. Both teams were 36 percent from the floor.

The Flames outrebounded Peru State 41-36 but also had more turnovers. CSM finished with 23 turnovers and the Bobcats had 19.

"We made more shots and more 3-pointers than Peru State, but we couldn't keep them off the free-throw line where they outscored us by 15," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "They outworked us, played quicker and harder than we did and definitely were the more physical team as evidenced by their 34 free-throw attempts to our 18."

Madelyn Turner (SR/Bennington, Neb.) had a game-high 15 points for the Flames. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Teammate Kenzi Hoit (SR/Omaha, Neb.) had a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Also for CSM, Reilly Palmer (FR/Elkhorn, Neb.) scored eight points, Allison Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) knocked in seven points and both Allisa Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) and Madelyn Gaughen (FR/Cedar Bluffs, Neb.) finished with six.

"Madelyn Turner was really aggressive all night on the offensive end and I felt like Madelyn Gaughen gave us another solid performance. Once Kylee settled in she had a nice game for us."

The Flames return to action Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest at York University.

"Between now and next Tuesday we need to find an identity of who we want to be moving forward," Walker said. "We can't get outworked or allow the other team to be more physical than us and expect to be competitive in any game we play."
