Flames Get Big Win Heading Into Holiday Break

The Thanksgiving holiday break will be a little bit sweeter for the College of Saint Mary basketball team as the Flames are heading into the break with a big road win.

CSM defeated Hastings College 61-58 Tuesday night in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

College of Saint Mary trailed almost the entire game but got a big basket from Clare Lewandowski (SR/Lincoln, Neb.) with 6:58 remaining in the game to put the Flames ahead 50-49. After a little back-and-forth, Lewandowski got another clutch basket with 46 seconds remaining in the game to put CSM back ahead 59-58 for a lead the Flames held onto for the win.

"We really needed this win," CSM Coach Kirk Walker said. "Our defensive intensity was there the whole night and I thought our ladies showed a lot of fight when we were down by 12 points and were able to come back and take a lead."

Madelyn Turner (SR/Bennington, Neb.) and Morgann Worden (FR/Laramie, Wyo.) led CSM with 12 points each. Teammate Bailey White (SR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) canned 11 points, Allison Schubert (JR/Council Bluffs, Iowa) tallied 10 and Lewandowski finished with six. Schubert and Lewandowski each had seven rebounds to lead the Flames and Schubert also added four steals.

"I'm really proud of the ladies for sticking with it, coming together and finding a way to get it done," Walker said. "Hopefully we can build off of this momentum and continue to grow as a team."

The Flames are now 1-3 in the GPAC and 3-5 overall. The Broncos drop to 1-2, 3-3.

CSM's next game is at 6 p.m. Saturday at University of Nebraska Kearney. The game will be an exhibition contest for the Flames.
