As agricultural events unfold across Nebraska this summer, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) is urging livestock owners to prioritize animal health and safety. With numerous county fairs and competitions on the horizon, NDA emphasizes the importance of safeguarding animals, particularly those participating in shows.
The department has outlined several guidelines for livestock owners. Before attending any event, it is crucial to ensure that all equipment is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Additionally, monitoring an animal's health is essential; sick animals should not be taken to shows.
During events, stress can affect animals. Owners are advised to keep a close watch for signs of heat stress or illness. Sharing tools with other exhibitors should be avoided. Furthermore, when using community hoses, animals should not drink directly from them nor should hoses be dipped into buckets.
Post-event precautions include isolating show animals upon returning home and checking for any signs of illness. Animals should not have nose-to-nose contact with others. Consulting a veterinarian if an animal becomes ill is recommended. Equipment used in isolation areas must be washed and disinfected after each use. All items used at the show—vehicles, trailers, containers, and equipment—should also be cleaned and disinfected.
These measures aim to prevent disease spread and maintain safe environments for both humans and animals at these events.
