Governor Jim Pillen has appointed the Honorable Derek Ray Vaughn of Omaha to serve as Associate Justice on the Nebraska Supreme Court, representing the Second Judicial District. This appointment fills the vacancy created by Justice Miller-Lerman’s retirement on October 31 after 33 years of service.

“Judge Vaughn has notable experience as a judge and as a prosecutor,” said Gov. Pillen. “He has a heart for the Omaha community and a long-standing history of public service. His integrity and commitment to the law are evident and I’m pleased to promote him to this role on the Nebraska Supreme Court.”

Justice Vaughn expressed his gratitude during the announcement, standing with his family. “I’m grateful to Gov. Pillen for this amazing opportunity,” said Justice Vaughn. “I look forward to continuing my service to the people of Nebraska.”

Vaughn’s legal career includes serving as a district court judge in Douglas County since August 2023 and previously spending ten years as a county court judge in Douglas County. Before becoming a judge, he worked in the Douglas County Attorney’s Office, handling both criminal and civil cases, including work with problem-solving courts.

His involvement extends beyond his judicial duties. Vaughn has taught at several regional colleges and universities such as University of Nebraska – Omaha (UNO), Midland University, and Dana College. He has also served on boards like the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Urban League of Nebraska Board of Directors, Nebraska Coalition for Juvenile Justice, and Office of Violence Prevention Advisory Board.

Justice Vaughn is active in professional organizations including the Nebraska Bench Media Committee, which aims to foster relationships between attorneys, courts, and media professionals. He also participates in community activities through Salem Baptist Church and coordinates events at Zion Baptist Church.

Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly spoke about his two-decade friendship with Justice Vaughn from their time as prosecutors together. Lt. Gov. Kelly noted that one quality making Vaughn well-suited for the Supreme Court is his engagement with people outside judicial settings: “He’s a people person,” continued Lt. Gov. Kelly. “He likes to meet people, he likes to learn about what they’re doing, what they’re up to and he listens. Listening is a great part of the job.”

Justice Vaughn holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and earned his juris doctor from University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL) College of Law.

The Second Judicial District covers Douglas County.
