Rami Hinrichs, a junior psychology major and sociology/anthropology minor, was selected as a recipient of a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad.
Hinrichs will spend the fall semester at Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea. She is among nearly 3,000 undergraduate students from across the U.S. selected for the 2022 scholarship.
"Winning the scholarship meant that all of my hard work paid off," said Hinrichs. "I wouldn’t have been able to afford studying abroad without the scholarship. It is because of the scholarship that I am able to travel overseas and experience something that will positively impact my academic journey, and hopefully even my future career." Hinrichs is excited to use this opportunity to learn more about the Korean language, and "to explore my food options and try new things."
The Gilman Scholarship is a nationally competitive program that assists students with study abroad expenses. The program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go. The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Hinrichs encourages those applying for the Gilman to believe in themselves, and not to feel overwhelmed. "I’ll admit the process of applying for the scholarship is daunting, but the Gilman allows students to study abroad who wouldn't otherwise have the financial means. You’ve got this, keep going, and I believe in you. Studying abroad can open so many doors and allow you to grow as a person."
Hinrichs graduated from Sandy Creek Sr/Jr High School in 2019. Nearly 60 NWU students have received the Gilman Scholarship since the program began in 2001.
