WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 17, 2023, U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts (R-NE) released the following statement after the Senate voted to block the Biden administration’s new “public charge” rule from the Department of Homeland Security. The new rule expands the taxpayer-funded benefits that illegal immigrants can receive without risking their green card applications.

“These kinds of failed policies from the Biden administration are part of why we have a crisis on our southern border,” said Senator Ricketts. “Our immigration policies should reward self-sufficiency and grit. Instead, the public charge rule sends a message that taxpayers will pick up the tab for migrants once they reach our country. Our safety net is meant to help Americans in need of short-term assistance, not encourage green card holders to be reliant on taxpayer-funded government benefits.”
