Omaha Metro Drivers: Plan Now for Busy Construction Season

Construction

Road construction season is beginning in the Omaha metro area, and drivers should be prepared for traffic delays and other impacts to their commutes throughout the coming months. The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Transportation and other local jurisdictions has put together an online, interactive map to inform drivers of projects, anticipated traffic impacts and timeframes. Find Moving the Metro information and all projects at ndot.info/mtm. NDOT construction projects with significant impacts will occur in the following areas:

• Interstate 80 (I-80) from Nebraska Highway 66 (N-66) to N-50

• U.S. Highway 75 (US-75) at the following locations – o US-75 and I-480 interchange (by Creighton University) o US-75 at N-370 and Chandler Road o Southbound US-75, I-480 to Chandler Road o US-75 ramps to and from L Street

• US-275 (Center Street) at 156th Street Traffic impacts may include: delays, longer commute times, reduced number of driving lanes, and detours. NDOT plans major traffic shifts and closures during overnight hours to the greatest extent possible to reduce impacts. However, some construction activities will need to occur during the day to be completed safely and efficiently.

Media who want to learn more about specific projects and impacts to the traveling public are invited to contact Jeni Campana with NDOT to arrange interviews and connect with project leaders.

In 2020, 857 people were killed in 774 fatal work zone crashes – most of them motorists and their passengers. Slowing down, driving without distractions and being prepared to expect the unexpected are ways drivers can keep themselves and construction workers safe on the roads this construction season. Visit 511.nebraska.gov for a real-time look at traffic. Stay safe during construction – slow down, follow detours and buckle up, phone down.
