The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), a prominent advocacy group for small businesses in Nebraska, recently organized its annual Small Business Day at the Capitol. The event aimed to facilitate discussions between small business owners and key state leaders, including Governor Jim Pillen, Senator Rob Clements, Chair of the Appropriations Committee, and Senator Brad von Gillern, Chair of the Revenue Committee.

Ryan McIntosh, NFIB Nebraska State Director, addressed some pressing challenges faced by small business owners. "Nebraska’s small business owners are facing difficult decisions due to rising costs and workforce shortages," McIntosh stated. He further expressed concerns over regulatory pressures: "Regulations like the Paid Leave Mandate only add to the enormous amount of pressure Main Street faces." McIntosh emphasized the need for legislative support: "I’m grateful Governor Pillen, Senator Clements, and Senator von Gillern took time to hear from our members. Small businesses need lawmakers’ support now more than ever. NFIB calls on the Nebraska Legislature to pass paid sick leave reforms and other policies that will boost Main Street."

During the event, Governor Pillen shared his priorities for the current legislative session. Senators Clements and von Gillern provided insights into the budget process and what stakeholders can anticipate in upcoming weeks.

Attendees were also briefed on Initiative 436, which requires all private employers in Nebraska to offer paid sick leave to employees. Additionally, updates were given on matters such as the 20% small business deduction and the Corporate Transparency Act.
