Restoration News announced that Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen proposed allowing undocumented immigrants to remain in the United States if they are barred from voting, holding office, or receiving government benefits.

Immigration policy remains deeply divisive in the United States, with only modest consensus among Americans on how to address undocumented residents. According to a March 2025 Pew Research Center survey, while one-third of U.S. adults (32%) believe all undocumented immigrants should be deported, about half (51%) say that at least some should face deportation—especially those convicted of violent crimes. This split reflects broader tensions between enforcement priorities and more moderate or humanitarian perspectives on immigration reform.

Agriculture in the United States is heavily supported by foreign-born workers, many of whom are undocumented. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service reports that in 2020–2022, only 32% of crop farmworkers were U.S.-born citizens, 7% were naturalized immigrants, 19% were other authorized immigrants, and the remaining 42% held no work authorization. These figures highlight how widespread undocumented labor is within farm labor, explaining why policy proposals targeting that workforce garner significant attention.

Nationally, approximately 70% of all agricultural workers are foreign-born, underscoring the dependence of U.S. agriculture on immigrant labor. A fact sheet from the National Center for Farmworker Health indicates that 63% of agricultural workers were born in Mexico and 30% were born in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. This demographic breakdown reflects long-standing patterns in the farm workforce and informs policy discussions around labor shortages and legal status reforms.
